Copenhagen 12-13 Oct
It was quite a train ride up from Berlin to Copenhagen (and glad my rail pass is still valid for another couple of days as it probably would have been an expensive one too) Changed trains in Hamburg and had time for a quick coffee with Jess at the station before continuing on my way. Pretty ride up but the coolest thing was when the train drove right onto the ferry and right back off at the other side!
I had another bout of awesome luck with timing in Copenhagen and one step better than Salzburg's "Night at the Museum", the 12th of Oct was Copenhagen's "Night of Culture" with so much more than just musuems open it really was a great night out! Started with City Hall (can't turn down free coffee and cake!), next the Danish Design Centre was awesome with its travel gadgets, watches, lights and cars and then I checked out a dance performance at the Glyptotek with everything from interpretive to breakdancing. Checked out some information about Esperanto, "Play Day" with a sandpit and campfire in one of the squares, Human Rights tent and got a book on "The Way to Happiness", Helligrands church and a cannonball reenactment at Tojhus before calling it a night.
Wanted to give Copenhagen a real thorough exploration in the daylight so had a 4 hour city walk with my rucksack (glad there were no hills) and definitely saw a lot : ) Started at the Town Hall Square past Lurdblower's column toward Nytorv Square with the court building. Hojbro Plads was a pretty nice square overlooking Christianborg Palace and the city canals before finding another pretty square (Kongens Nytorv) with cool houses and the Royal Theatre. The port of Nyhavn was awesome with brightly coloured houses lining the port lit up by the morning sun that was just coming out from behind the clouds. Marble Church was awesome from the outside, as was the square enclosed by Amalienborg Palace (residence of the royal family) which looked out over the new Opera House. Past Geflon fountain and the Langeline Harbour Promenade I finally found the Little Mermaid and walked back into town via Kastellet (Europe's best preserved fortification), the yellow Nyboder houses (built in the 17th C for the navy), Jerusalems Church, and Kogens Have (a renaissance garden) home to the Rosenborg Castle. Last few notable things on my quick tour were the Round Tower, Church of our Lady Cathedral (where the crown prince couple were wed in 2004).
Copenhagen is a really pretty city to wander around and I was really lucky with the sun coming out as I walked along by the harbour and the people were friendly. Would definitely recommend a trip here if you're heading up to this part of Europe : )
