Heya, this is Melissa from NZ. I'm finally heading off on the OE I've wanted to do forever and really excited about it! Although I'll miss all my friends and family back home in NZ heaps I'm looking forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones on my tavels. So use this to keep track of me as I trot around the globe so I don't have to send massive emails this time. Keep in touch - kiwigirlnextdoor@yahoo.co.nz

May in London

Looking back over the month, the weather has been pretty dismal (but hey Im living in London so I guess I can't complain), the "April Showers" finally arrived in May but unlike me to waste any time living abroad I still managed to make the most of it. Got away with the Cubs and Scouts to Cluster Camp at the start of May which was amazing (probably a good thing it wasnt too hot with all the running around outside we did), took a day trip to Oxford and met a Scottish guy who stayed at our place for a couple of days so more Haggis and Whiskey - woohoo! And in the middle of the month I ventured to Bremen and Hamburg for a long weekend (check out the huge blog entry)

Caught up with Jayne for Japanese dinner, Katia and Tom for Spanish food, Paul (Jr) and his mate Hayley for Friday night drinks. Had some serious issues with my flights home - just miscommunication as to whether they were 12 or 18 month round the world tickets that I had purchased - so a bit stressy in the middle of the month but think it is all worked out now although I will have less time in SE Asia (probably only enough time to do Thailand and the Phillipines) than I originally wanted but might get the chance to go to Egypt which would be cool.

Went to a "Sound of Music Sing-a-long" Movie this month at the Prince Charles Cinema (which has funky couchettes in the back!) which was amazing, it was a four hour show - they had a drag queen to warm us all up for the first half an hour and then showed the original movie with subtitles for all the songs so we could sing along! We even had little props to make us feel even more involved, and heaps of people were dressed up as nuns or brown papaer packages tied up with string! It was great because it automatically broke the stereotype of not being able to talk during a movie so people were really interacting and talking back to / cheering on / boo-ing certain characters all throughout the film, it was a great night out!!

The last weekend in May was a bank holiday (yay for four day weekends!) I spent Saturday night at Katia's house (the family she lives with were away) and we had a sophisticated night with a good dinner and nice wine before the ruckus of the Church the next day. With everybody having Monday off it was soo packed but we had a great time with Paul, Hayley and a few of their friends and ended up at Temple Walkabout until it closed. Monday was absolutely freezing (had to pull out my winter jacket again!) so just went out for pub food and enjoyed a quiet afternoon at home.

One of the coolest things this month was a free screening of Swan Lake in Trafalgar Square. We had been there earlier in the week when it was covered in grass for two days - which was amazing! And this time they had a huge big screen set up in front of Nelson's Column and they broadcast Swan Lake from the Royal Opera House for free so everyone could enjoy it, it was an awesome experience and they even gave us free inflatable cushions to sit on (seeing as the grass was gone and it was back to grey slabs of concrete : ( which came in handy as I took the last train out to Heathrow to sleep at the airport and meet Michaela off her flight from Chicago on Friday morning! Crazy!
